This blog entry isn’t directly about Verna’s work at all, but rather about strange discoveries of valuable pieces by random people. It is just something we found interesting so we thought we’d pass it on.
Just a few months ago, a truck driver bought an abstract painting at a thrift shop for about $5 as a joke. It turns out that it is like an original Jackson Pollock at a thrift store, and she has already turned down $2 million for it. A link to the story is at: http://www.etrucker.com/apps/news/article.asp?id=59931
In 2006 (I think) a customer in a Nashville thrift shop came up with an extraordinarily rare original print of the Declaration of Independence for which he paid something like $7 or $8. (It’s not an original, apparently, a few dozen copies were printed back in the 1800s). When he put it up for auction it was thought to be worth about $125,000 but finally sold for over $477,000.
And finally, a more savvy collector recently swooped on an oil by a major Canadian painter for about $200. The piece is estimated to be worth at least $100,000. You can read more about this find at http://www.cbc.ca/cp/Oddities/070515/K051506AU.html
