One topic leads to another…recent comments about Jackson Pollock and the movie about him brings to mind other interesting films. Here’s some that are “Verna recommended”:
Crumb (1994) This is a fascinating documentary about a most fascinating artist. Assuming you don’t have any problem calling R. Crumb an artist even if he is best known for cartoons.
Basquiat (1996) Very well made film about the unfortunately brief career of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The director Julian Schabel knew the New York art scene of those days well. Great turn by David Bowie as Andy Warhol.
Art School Confidential (2006) Like Crumb, also directed by Terry Zwigoff. A very dark and cynical view of the politics of art school. Not quite as riveting as Crumb but a good watch and certainly should be required viewing by any young dewy optimistic person considering art school.
Rivers and Tides (2001) Andy Goldsworthy creates beautiful and unique outdoor pieces using natural items such as leaves, rocks, grass, and ice. Hard to describe but many pieces are truly breathtaking.
These aren’t very detailed reviews but we all agree that we recommend all of them.
Since this blog has “alcohol” and “art” in its title, a quick comment about the relationship between the two.
It’s sort of a cliche how many artists tend to have addictive, self-destructive personalities. But that’s not always the case. But certainly in the case of Pollock and Basquiat their demons brought them down. And being an addict and/or alcoholic certainly has nothing to do with the quality of your artwork.
