Woman with hair dryer (1991)

The piece uploaded this week was an early photo manipulation completed in 1991. It started with a snapshot of a woman sitting on a toilet using a hair dryer. Verna has not said whether she is the model and we get the feeling we better not press the question. The photo was manipulated in Photoshop and blown up. The finishing touch was the toilet paper decoration–this is probably the earliest “decorated” Verna piece; before this they were all flat pieces whether oil, acrylic, pastel, pen, or pencil. Size is 43×24 inches. The model might be Verna or it might not…it’s hopeless to try to get a straight answer out of her about those kinds of details.

(Slightly modified this entry on 25 Jun 2007.)

This weekend Verna visited “Bodies: The Exhibiton” This is of course one of the plastinated anatomy exhibits that have become very popular the last few years. In her opinion, the exhibition was pretty well done, but could have been much better lit. The Bodyworks exhibit is probably a better one. However, it was still very worthwhile and she recommends anyone with an interest in anatomy, either as an artist, medical student, or just interested human being should go to one of these exhibitions.
