You can read about it at the ArtWalk website. The weekend was unusually hot for San Diego this time of year; the next day a record was set at the airport of 94, breaking the old record of 88… In any case there were hundreds of artists’ works to look at (the PR says over 400 artists), and people seemed to be enjoying the Summery weather. I didn’t think it was that crowded but Omar thought it was well attended. The sponsoring organization claims 100,000 people attend each year. I think that number might be a bit inflated but it’s certainly in the higher 10s of 1000s.
Like anything else, many of the artists exhibiting were not to our tastes. But to both of us, the most intriguing and creative group was an enclave of Mexican artists from Baja California who set up on Kettner street. Their work was most compelling and unexpected as a group. We were sad that it was after 6:00 PM and the exhibitors were all breaking down for the night. Next year, if we go, we’ll definitely search out the Baja group first if they’re all in a group like that again.
