This is another guy who you may or may not consider an “outsider.” After many years, he actually is successful to the point where people and organzations commission his work for big fees, and he did attend arts university. None the less, some of his stuff is so drop dead gorgeous that it takes your breath away, even on DVD or in books which are obviously a step removed from the actual works.

I consider myself fortunate that I was actually able to personally view a work of his which is on the grounds of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. It’s not a major work but it still has power.

Actually, in some cases video and photography is the only way to see his work, as it can be either very transitory (sculpture of ice), located in remote areas (like the north pole), or so large that it requires aerial views to get a sense of the whole thing (like his earthworks at the Storm King art park.)
