Paying a fortune for cable sometimes pays off if you browse around and see what’s playing in the middle of the night. We noticed that this movie was showing on the IFC channel which was nice since they run their films without commercials.
Basically it’s the story of Vincent Van Gogh’s struggle to create his art, his inner torment and tumultuous relationship with his brother Theo. It was directed by Robert Altman. I probably recommend it to any young person who is on fire with creating art, because, for the millionth time, it proves that the single best thing that an artist can do is die. Vincent sold one painting in his life, even though his devoted brother was an art dealer in Paris. What more would the average artist want in order to be successful? But one of his paintings sold for something like 22 million UK pounds when the movie was made.
On that happy note…I still recommend it, although I’m not sure there is any redemption there, as Vincent’s mind finally snaps, and Theo’s subsequent shock and depression resulted in his death only a year later.
