A museum gripe: rude, pushy docents

There was an interesting exhibit scheduled at the San Diego Museum of Art (and not to be a snob, but this is hardly a world-class museum. San Diego has a world class zoo, not museum). There was an interesting exhibit scheduled at the San Diego Museum of Art (and not to be a snob, but this is hardly a world-class museum. San Diego has a world class zoo, not museum). Anyway the exhibit was “Georgia O’Keeffe and the Women of the Stieglitz Circle”.

So I buy my ticket and am admiring some of the photographs. A docent comes up with a small tour group behind her and peremptorily tells me to move so she can lecture. I move down a few photos and am looking at another one when she comes up AGAIN and does the SAME THING.

Somehow, I think I should have been given a little more consideration than that, as a paying patron. Do you think I’m out of line?

I talked to some friends about it, and we agreed that 90% of the problem was probably her attitude. If she had only said, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I’d like to lecture on this painting, would you mind?” I probably would have been glad to step aside or even listen with her group.

On that note did I mention that I watched several Sister Wendy art videos? She’s just the most adorable thing, with her rabbit teeth and little lisp, but probably more important than that is her deep appreciation and quiet passion for fine art. Rent or borrow, or even buy, her videos if you can!
